Telling stories to people using pictures and words

POSTED ON: BY Robert Lomas

As part of careers month at Ladybarn Primary School in Manchester, Design By Day were invited in to the school by teacher Miss Cree to give a talk to year 3 pupils about what we do as graphic designers.

This wasn’t as easy as it sounds, how do you explain something as complex as visual communication to such a young audience? And how do you keep their attention? This could potentially be a really tough crowd!

We decided the best way was to simplify our explanations and to get them all involved in what was going on as much as possible.

We explained design as ‘Telling stories to people using pictures and words’ and set them a brief to tell us a story using the ipad drawing app Doodle Buddy.

The results of this were amazing and being in the classroom when they talked about their stories put a big smile on our faces.

All in all it was a great experience and we hope the pupils of year 3 enjoyed it as much as we did.

The picture above is a story by Kane and Dani of Class 3s.
