The University of Manchester
The University of Manchester Library is one of only five National Research Libraries. With more than 4 million printed books and manuscripts, over 41,000 electronic journals and 500,000 electronic books, as well as several hundred databases, the library is one of the best-resourced academic libraries in the country and boasts multiple sites over a number of campuses.
Design By Day was commissioned to create the visual identity for the library’s Get Started’ campaign for 2016 and beyond. Previous implementations of the campaign had been lost in the noise of the overall UoM communications. It was important that the new campaign was visually distinct and positioned the Library as friendly, accessible, innovative and knowledgeable.
We created a visual identity for the ‘Get Started’ campaign that worked within the the University of Manchester core brand whilst being distinct enough to be easily recognised across campus as signage and information for students getting started with the library. The core brand colours were used with the addition of a third colour to ensure a fresh modern palette to appeal to the primary audience of new undergraduate users as well as postgraduate and experienced library users.
The ‘chevron’ was used as the key graphic device throughout the campaign and to represent the moving forward of students within their university journey. A range of simple illustrations were created for use within the chevron application to communicate the various academic and cutting-edge technology resources available to students. The identity was designed with longevity in mind and to be easily transferable across different marketing and communication materials.
